Enforcement Directorate arrests separatist leader Shabir Shah in Srinagar

New Delhi: A day after seven separatists leaders were arrested in Srinagar by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with terror funding in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Enforcement directorate on Tuesday night arrested yet another Kashmiri separatist leader and this time it was Shabir Shah.

A Delhi court had had issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him

According to a senior police official, Shah was arrested in connection with over a decade-old money laundering case against him for alleged terror financing in the Kashmir valley. He is expected to be brought to Delhi on Wednesday and will subsequently be produced in a court here.

The police official said that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had issued multiple summons to Shah in pursuance of the August 2005 case, but he never deposed before the agency.

Earlier, this month, a Delhi court had had issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him. “Now the said NBW has been executed,” added the official.

With regards the August 2005 case, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell had arrested Mohammed Aslam Wani, an alleged hawala dealer, who had claimed that he passed on Rs 2.25 crore to Shabir Shah.

The ED had registered a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Shah and Wani.

The official said that during questioning, Wani had told the police that Rs 50 lakh was to be delivered to Shah and Rs 10 lakh to Jaish-e-Mohammad area commander in Srinagar, Abu Baqar, and that the rest was his commission.

Sources also claimed that JKLF chief Yasin Malik was also arrested on Tuesday night. Also, the Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest.

“It would be of little surprise if Mirwaiz Umer Farroq is also arrested in a day or two as his role in anti-India propaganda is also beyond doubt. Also his role in recent lynching of deputy SP Ayub Pandit is under scanner,” said the official.
