49 dead as Bangladeshi aircraft crashes at Nepal’s Kathmandu airport

Kathmandu: At least 49 people were killed and 23 injured when a US-Bangla Airlines plane crash-landed and exploded into a ball of flame at the Tribhuvan International Airport here on Monday, police said.

The airport had been shut down and all other flights diverted

Nepal Police spokesperson Manoj Neupane said the bodies of 31 passengers have been recovered at the site and nine others succumbed to their injuries in hospitals. The plane, with 71 on board, was flying from Dhaka to Kathmandu.

Rescue workers recovered badly burnt bodies from the wreckage of the aircraft near the tarmac of the airport.

The airport had been shut down and all other flights diverted.

Mountainous Nepal is notorious for air accidents. Small aircraft often run into trouble at provincial airstrips.

The ill-fated aircraft of the US-Bangla Airlines is a unit of the US-Bangla Group, a US Bangladeshi joint venture company.

The Bangladeshi carrier launched operations in July 2014 and operates Bombardier Inc and Boeing aircraft.
