CBI arrests Karti Chidambaram in INX Media money laundering case

Chennai/New Delhi: Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI from Chennai airport here on Wednesday morning in connection with the INX money laundering case.

According to an official, the Central Bureau of Investigation official said that he was arrested from the Chennai airport after he returned from London by British Airways flight at around 8 am.

On May 15, 2017, the CBI had registered an FIR against Karti Chidambaram on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, accepting gratification by corrupt or illegal means, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct.

Karti Chidambaram allegedly received Rs 3.5 crore from the Mumbai-based INX media, now 9X Media, for helping it get Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance, when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, both accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.

The FIR does not mention Chidambaram senior, though it said he cleared the FIPB approval for Rs 4.62 crore Foreign Direct Investment in the firm at an FIPB meeting on May 18, 2007.

Karti’s chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman was recently arrested from a five-star hotel in Delhi on February 16.

The national investigative agency has alleged that Karti received money from INX Media for using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against it in a case of violation of Foreign Investment Promotion Board conditions to receive investment from Mauritius.

The CBI has said that it also seized vouchers of Rs 10 lakh which were allegedly paid for the services.

Last week, Karti, a son of Congress leader P Chidambaram, moved the Supreme Court (SC) seeking a stay on the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) summons against him in the INX Media case.

Meanwhile, the Congress party termed it a “diversionary tactic” of the Narendra Modi government to hide its “corrupt governance model”.

The Congress also said that the arrest made from Chennai on Wednesday in connection with an FIPB clearance case, will not deter the party from bringing out the truth before the people.

Party spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said that the move smells of “vendetta politics” of the Bharatiya Janata Party against its opponents.

“Classic diversionary tactic of the Modi government to hide their own corrupt governance model that is being exposed on a daily basis– be it Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Dwarka Das Seth Jewellers,” Chaturvedi said.

“The BJP government continues its vendetta and vindictive politics to target opponents. However, it will not stop the Congress from bringing the truth out before the people,” Chaturvedi said.

Sources said that later at around 10.30 am, Karti was flown to Delhi where he will be produced before a CBI court for custodial interrogation.
