Cheer! Despite poaching rhino population in Kaziranga up

Guwahati: Even though the famous Kaziranga National Park in Assam has been in news for all the wrong reasons, to be precise for growing incidents of rhino poaching, there is something to cheer about. Yes, the heartening side to the grim scenario is that the number of one-horned rhinos in Kaziranga has increased to over 2,400.

As per the latest census there were 1,651 adult rhinos and 294 sub adult rhinos in the park

According to the latest census data released on Saturday, by the state forest department, the number of rhino stands at 2,401. This is indicative of the fact that there has been a rise in rhino population by 71 rhinos in the last two years in the park.

A senior forest official said that the census is undertaken every three years with the last census being carried out in 2012.

Here it may be mentioned that due to rising incidents of poaching in Kaziranga, the state government conducted a special census of the rhinos in 2013 and after the completion of the exercise it was concluded that the rhino population in the park stood at 2329.

As per the 2012 census, the rhino population stood 2,290 and that again was indicative of the fact that despite trying circumstances, the population of rhinos in the park had increased and for this the credit goes to an ideal habitat.

A senior park official stated that as per the latest census there were 1,651 adult rhinos and 294 sub adult rhinos in the park.

This figure was followed by 251 juvenile rhinos in the park and 205 calves.

For carrying out the census, the forest department had roped in a number of wildlife NGOs. To ensure accuracy, the park was divided into 81 blocks and was carried out by using trained elephants informed the official.
