Four policemen killed, two injured in J&K’s Sopore IED blast

Srinagar: Four policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector, were killed and two others injured in a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that ripped through a market place in north Kashmir’s Sopore town of Baramulla district on Saturday.

The two injured were shifted to hospital in Srinagar

According to a senior police official, the IED blast damaged three shops in the Gole Market in Sopopre, once a hotbed of terrorism and separatist politics.

Sopore town is situated some 50 km north of Srinagar.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Munir Khan said four policemen were killed in the IED explosion. The policemen were from the 3rd Battalion of Indian Reserve Police

The police official said that the IED was planted by terrorists with the help of their over Ground Wrker (OGW) near a shop.

He said that immediately after the blast an intensive search operation was launched and the area was cordoned off by the security forces.

The two injured were shifted to hospital in Srinagar, said the police official.

The otherwise busy market was closed for the day in response to a shutdown called by the separatists to mark the 19th anniversary of the killings of some 55 people following a terror attack on security forces in 1993.

Authorities had deployed a large number of security forces in the market and other areas of Sopore to maintain law and order situation in the wake of the protest shutdown call given by the separatists.

Meanwhile, Pakistan based terror outfit Jais-e-Mohammad has claimed responsibility for the IED blast.
