If EVMs were tampered with, Akalis would have been in power: Amarinder
New Delhi: It was former Union Law minister Veerappa Moily who first rejected party’s claims of EVM tampering and said that a defeat should be accepted with grace and now it is Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh who too hold similar views.
Contradicting the stand of his Congress party that the machines were not infallible, Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said that if the EVMs were tampered with, he would not have been in power.
He said, “if EVMs were fixed then I wouldn’t be sitting here. The Akalis would.”
Amarinder is the second senior Congress leader after former law minister Veerappa Moily who too stood up in defence of the EVMs.
It may be mentioned here that the Congress has demanded that the EVMs be replaced with the old ballot paper system, forgetting that the Congress won 77 of Punjab’s 117 assembly seats, ending the decade-long rule of the Akali-BJP combine through EVMs.
With some opposition parties raising doubts on EVMs, the Election Commission has thrown ‘open challenge’ asking all and sundry try and hack EVMs from the first week of May.
