J&K encounter: 11 terrorists Killed, 2 Soldiers martyred as gunfight continues

Srinagar: Two civilians were killed and 50 others were injured as they clashed with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday after security forces shot dead 11 terrorists in the region.

There are still some more terrorists holed up in a house where the encounter is continuing

Of the 11 terrorists, 10 were killed in two encounters in Shopian while another was killed in Anantnag district.

A police official said that the reports of terrorists’ killings triggered civilian protests in Shopian.

He said that a youth, identified as Zubair Ahmad of Gopalpora in Kulgam district, was injured in clashes in Shopian’s Kachdoora village where three terrorists have been killed with encounter still on.

“There are still some more terrorists holed up in a house where the encounter is continuing,” said the police official adding that two soldiers have been martyred in the operation and four security personnel injured.

The injured youth who had been part of a stone pelting mob was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, added the police official.

State police chief SP Vaid said that the injured civilian would soon be discharged from hospitals where they all had been undergoing treatment.

According to reports, clashes erupted in Dragad, Sugan and some other places while youths also resorted to stone pelting to facilitate the trapped terrorist escape from the security cordon.

Cautioning local youths to stay away from encounter site, a senior security official reiterated that they would not tolerate any kind of hindrance in their operation to nab or neutralise the terrorists active in the area.

Police issued a statement saying most of the terrorists were yet to be identified — after speculation that LeT commander Naveed Jatt alias Abu Hunzullah was among the slain terrorists.

However, the police official informed that the terrorists responsible for killing of Lt Ummer Fayaz have been neutralised in the Shopian encounter in which majority of slain terrorists were locals and associated with either Hizbul or LeT.

Train service between Srinagar and Banihal has been suspended and Internet services have been blocked in south Kashmir.
