Karti Chidambaram sent to three more days of CBI custody in INX media case

New Delhi: A special CBI court on Tuesday extended by three days the custody of Congress leader P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram in INX media bribery case.

The next hearing on his bail plea will be held on March 9

The next hearing on his bail plea will be held on March 9.

Though the CBI had requested a Delhi court to extend its custody of Karti by another nine days, it was granted three days custodial interrogation of Karti Chidambaram.

Before the special CBI court pronounced the ruling, the CBI had, through its counsel additional solicitor general (ASG) Tushar Mehta, accused Karti of “non-cooperation”.

“After seizing of mobile, if the accused says, ‘I will not give my password, you go to hell’, this is also called non-cooperation,” Mehta had said.

Mehta alleged that Karti Chidambaram had been tampering with evidences in the case and “if the court extends the custody, then I will get a confession” from him.

“Indrani Mukharjea’s statement is one of the evidences for us, but it’s not the sole one,” added Mehta.

Karti Chidambaram’s lawyer Abhishek Singhvi opposed the CBI plea, saying his client was cooperating in the investigation.

Singhvi told the court that the accused had already spent five days in the agency’s custody and was confronted with Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive jailed in a murder case and a witness in the money laundering case, in Mumbai for only 25 minutes.

He contended that the agency had not submitted a single reason why it wants extension of the remand.

The court allowed Karti Chidambaram to meet his father and mother Nalini for 10 minutes in the court room.
