Shopian operation continues as two jawans martyred, three terrorists killed

Srinagar: Two soldiers were martyred and three others, including a captain, injured in an encounter with terrorists in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Sunday.

They all were hiding in a house in Awneera village

According to a senior police official, three terrorists were shot down by security personnel and a counter-operation is currently underway.

The slain terrorists have been identified as Yaseen Itoo, a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander along with aides Irfan-ul-Haq Sheikh and Umar Majid Sheikh .

They all were hiding in a house in Awneera village, said the police official adding that at least two terrorists have managed to escape.

He said that the injured soldiers were shifted to an Army base hospital in Srinagar’s Badami Bagh area.

The encounter started late on Saturday even when the security force on receiving specific information about the presence of some terrorists in the village, laid a cordon and launched the search operation. “As the security forces came close to the house where the terrorists were hiding, they were fired upon, triggering an encounter,” said the police official.

The police official said that the local youth clashed with the security forces to break the cordon around the village and in self defence, the security forces used pellet guns in which seven civilians sustained pellet injuries.

Among the five injured soldiers, two — Sepoy Ilayaraja P and Sepoy Gawai Sumedh Waman — succumbed to their injuries at the 92 Base Hospital of the Army.

Sepoy Ilayaraja hailed from Kandani village in Tamil Nadu and 25-year-old Sepoy Sumedh Waman belonged to Maharashtra’s Lonagra village.

The slain terrorists have been identified as Adil Ahmad Malik of the LeT, Irfan-ul-Haq Sheikh and Umar Majid Sheikh, who were affiliated with the Hizbul Mujahideen.
