Speeding train kills four wild elephants in Assam

Guwahati: At least four elephants were killed and two others injured in Assam after a train hit a herd trying to cross railway tracks late on Saturday.

The accident spot was an identified elephant corridor

According to Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), PJ Sharma, the incident took place late Saturday night near Hawaipur railway station when the Guwahati-Silchar passenger express train hit the elephant herd, killing four of them on spot.

If locals claims are taken in account, the accident spot was an identified elephant corridor.

Locals alleged that they tried to signal the loco pilot to slow down due to the movement of elephants but to no avail, resulting in death of four pachyderms.

Sources said that the railway officials were looking into the claims of the locals to ascertain the cause of the accident.
