Strayed wild leopard caught in Siliguri

Siliguri: After playing hide and seek with the authorities for over a week, the end came late on Tuesday night when efforts to catch the vagabond feline alive fructified.

The trapped leopard has been handed over to Sukna wildlife wing for thorough examination by a vet

According to locals, a wild leopard strayed into human settlements and created havoc for at least a week during which it attacked the domectic livestock with impunity. “Frequent strikes by this leopard led to locals living under constant fear for their lives,” said the local.

However, the forest department authorities finally succeeded in catching the leopard from the outskirts of this northern West Bengal town late on Tuesday night, said a senior forest department official.

Giving details here on Wednesday, the forest official said that the leopard, which had unleashed a reign of terror in the area for nearly a week, was finally trapped in cage kept at a secluded place. “To lure the feline into the trap, a dog was tied in the cage. This drew the leopard into the cage and as it pounced on the dog, the shutter of the cage dropped and the animal was trapped,” said the official.

The forest official said that the trapped leopard has been handed over to Sukna wildlife wing for thorough examination by a vet before it is released again in the wild.
