Terror attack on CRPF camp in Srinagar thwarted, fierce encounter on

Srinagar: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was martyred in an ongoing encounter with terrorists holed up in a building after a failed terror bid on a CRPF camp in Srinagar.

The two were forced to flee as the alert sentry fired at them

According to a senior police official, the CRPF jawan was wounded in the shootout as the security forces prepared for a final assault against the holed-up terrorists.

The injured CRPF jawan was immediately rushed to the nearby SMHS hospital, barely 300 metres away from the site of the gunfight, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The police official said that the residents in the vicinity have been evacuated to safety.

Troops of the CRPF and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police were carrying out the operation against the holed-up terrorists.

Jammu and Kashmir police chief SP Vaid in a tweet said: “I congratulate alert CRPF sentry for averting Suicidal attack in Karan nagar Srinagar. Fortunately two terrorists are in cordon & exchange of fire going on.”

Earlier around 4.30 am, at least two terrorists were spotted by an alert sentry at the observation post of 23rd battalion of the CRPF in Karan Nagar area.

The terrorists were forced to flee as the alert sentry fired at them.

The police official said that the searches in the area revealed that the terrorists, carrying backpacks and AK-47 rifles, had taken shelter in a building near the CRPF camp.

Security forces from CRPF Valley QAT and 23 Bn CRPF have cornered the terrorists who have been hiding in a house, which has been cordoned off by the CRPF, said the police official.

After the hiding terrorists were challenged, they fired at the security forces triggering an encounter that continues till reports last came in.

It may be recalled that two days ago, armed terrorists had stormed the Sunjuwan Army camp in Jammu, killing five security personnel and one civilian. Six army personnel and six civilians were injured. Four terrorists were also neutralised by the security forces.
