Tiger kills rhino in Dudhwa National Park
Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh): In a rare but deadly conflict, an adult rhinoceros was killed by a tiger in the rhino project area of Dudhwa National Park.
A senior forest official told Indileak that the incident came to light on Saturday when a patrol party of the forest department spotted the partially eaten carcass of the rhino. “Since the body of the dead rhino was partially eaten from the rear, it ruled out any foul play and conclusively established that the animal was killed by a tiger during a rare conflict,” said the official.
He said that the dead rhino was buried at the same spot after carrying out the routine formality.
It may be mentioned here that this is the first incident of a adult rhino being killed by a tiger in Dudhwa since the inception of rhino reintroduction programme that commenced in early eighties.
Tigers generally do not attack adult rhino as they are a formidable foe, said an expert.
He said that in this case in all probability the rhino may have been asleep on the ground when the tiger caught it unaware and killed it and ate a portion of dead rhino as is natural for all predators.
