Young leopard found dead in metal snare in Goa
Panaji: A young male leopard was found dead on Tuesday in a metal snare meant to trap wild boars near a village here.
Forest Department officials said that the leopard could have accidentally got trapped in the metal snare near Wadaval village in Bicholim sub district on Monday and died after much struggle on Tuesday.
On the other hand experts said that the role of poachers in putting up a metal snare to trap the leopard could not be ruled out.
“The leopard was around four to five years old and the cause of death will be formally established after a forensic examination. Prima facie, it appears that the animal died to to internal haemmorage after it was caught in the trap,” a Forest Department official told media persons.
It may be recalled that a full-grown tiger was similarly found dead some years ago in a metal snare at a place in Bicholim, 30 km from Panaji. “Such snare are often planted on game trails by poachers to trap wild boars, much sought for its meat, which fetches a high value,” pointed out an expert.
