Yet another rhino killed in Kaziranga; Fourth in a week

Guwahati: There has been a sudden spurt in rhino poaching in the famous Kaziranga National Park with yet another incident of rhino poaching reported on Friday.

This was the fourth incident of rhino poaching in a week

With this latest incident of rhino poaching, at least four rhino had been killed by the poachers within a span of a week.

According to a senior forest official, carcass of female rhino was recovered by the park staff from near the Kahara range on Thursday. “Since the horn was sawed, it can be said with conviction that it was the handiwork of poachers who have again become active in the area,” said the forest official.

He said that this was the fourth incident of rhino poaching in a week as on November 2, poachers had killed the first rhino at Burhapahar range while another two rhinos, a female and her calf were killed within 48 hours of the November 2 poaching incident in the same forest range of the park.

Taking serious note of frequent incidents of rhino poaching, state chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal had asked the Superintendent of Police of the surrounding districts of the park to increase vigil and assist the Forest Department in not only containing the menace but also nabbing the culprits.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Friday staged a massive protest in Golaghat district that borders the park, demanding resignation of Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma, who according to the agitators has failed to contain the menace.
