Encounter underway in J&K’s Handwara, 3 terrorists trapped

Srinagar: An encounter between the security forces and some terrorists broke out early on Thursday morning in Shartgund Bala village in Kupwara district’s Handwara tehsil of Jammu and Kashmir.

The firing exchanges have stopped and searches were now going on

According to a police official, at least two to three terrorists are believed to be holed up in the area that has been cordoned off by the security forces.

On receiving specific information about presence of some terrorists in the area, the security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Shatgund village of Handwara tehsil.

As news about the encounter spread in the area, locals started pelting stones at the security forces near the encounter site.

A senior police official said that the firing exchanges have stopped and searches were now going on.

Unconfirmed reports said that at least three terrorists have been neutralised and body of one of the slain terrorist has been recovered by the forces.

There were reports that a top terrorist, Manan Bashir Wani, who had being pursuing Ph D from Aligarh Muslim University before joining terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, was among the three terrorists trapped inside the security cordon.

Authorities have ordered closure of all educational institutions and suspension of mobile internet services in the district.

In a separate incident in Pulwama district on Thursday, terrorists fired at and injured Special Police Officer (SPO) Bilal Ahmad in Karimabad village. He has been shifted to a hospital, said a police official.

Meanwhile, an Indian Army soldier has been injured in Pakistan firing on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, Defence Ministry said.

“Pakistan army violated ceasefire in Krishna Ghati (KG) sector of the LoC on Wednesday injuring one soldier,” Defence spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said.

He said: “The Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing in the KG sector around 9.30 pm. The injured soldier has been shifted to hospital.”
