BJP forced EC to ban campaigning in Bengal, alleges Mayawati

Lucknow: BSP President Mayawati on Thursday alleged that the Election Commission’s decision to curtail campaigning in West Bengal was taken under pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Why did they put the ban from 10 pm and not since the morning

“The Election Commission has banned the election campaign in West Bengal from 10 pm today (Thursday). But the Prime Minister is holding two rallies (before the ban comes into force). This shows that the Commission is working under the pressure of the BJP,” Mayawati told the media.

“Why did they put the ban from 10 pm and not since the morning? This proves that the Election Commission is working under the pressure of the BJP. It is unfair. The BJP has targeted Mamata Banerjee. There are attempts to defame the Bengal government,” she said.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief accused Modi and BJP President Amit Shah of targeting Banerjee. “This is a very dangerous and unjust trend.”

However, on the other side, a senior BJP leader said that with defeat looming large on the BSP-SP combine, the leaders of both the parties are out to level wild allegations on the constitutional body (EC). “Mayawati conveniently overlooked the fact that Mamata Banerjee had four programmes including two rallies and an equal number of roadshows lined up for Thursday,” pointed out the BJP leader who added that had the campaign been stopped from Wednesday night itself, the same set of opposition leaders would have cried hoarse and said that Mamata was denied campaign in the crucial last phase of the polls.
