Two terrorists killed in J&K’s Shopian encounter

Srinagar: Following an intense exchange of gunfire in the wee hours of Tuesday morning in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, the security forces succeeded in killing two terrorists belonging to Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH), an Al Qaeda arm headed till recently by Zakir Musa who was killed by security forces in a gunfight in Tral area of Pulwama district on May 24.

Giving this information, a statement issues by the state police said that large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from the encounter site.

On receiving credible information about presence of some terrorists in Awneera village of Zainapora area of Shopian, the security forces launched a cordon and search operation in wee hours.

As the security cordon tightened, the hiding terrorists opened fire, triggering an encounter in which two terrorists were neutralised.

The bodies of the slain terrorists have been recovered and they have been identified as Shakir Ahmad of Shopian and Sayar Bhat of Kulgam district. Both of them were affiliated with AGH outfit, said an official adding that incriminating materials besides arms and ammunition was recovered from the encounter site.

Though the encounter has ended, searches were still on to nab the terrorists who had possibly managed to escape from the encounter site.

As a precautionary measure authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in Kulgam and Shopian districts.

Meanwhile, the security forces have issued an appeal to locals to not venture into the area where the encounter took place as possibility of explosive materials planted by the terrorists could be not ruled out.
