Rahul Gandhi visits Balakote in J&K, meets victims family

Jammu: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi arrived here on Wednesday on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir and visited an area in Balakote near the LoC that was affected by huge shelling by the Pakistani forces.

After landing at Jammu airport, Gandhi immediately flew in a helicopter to the Balakote area of the LoC in Poonch district where six people were recently killed in Pakistan shelling.

After interacting with the affected people in Balakote, Rahul told mediapersons that the people of the area were very scared and worried.

He said that the locals had demanded that for their safety, bunkers be constructed and also insurance cover be extended for themselves and their cattle head.

During the course of his interaction with locals here, Rahul had detailed discussion with them and the family members of victims in the cross border shelling.

From Balakote, Rahul will proceed for other areas of the region affected by the series of ceasefire violations by the Pakistan army.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit the Kashmir Valley on Thursday. He would also visit the Ladakh region of the state during his current tour of the state.

State Congress party chief, Ghulam Ahmad Mir and other senior party leaders are accompanying the Congress vice president.
